Lesson 2

It's been a lazy week for exercise. I only had a couple of good hard sessions on the bag myself, the rest of the time I've been trying to improve my poker game.

Anyway, today was my students second lesson. Although he is still making basic mistakes, there is improvement from last week so I'm happy to see that.

The lesson was -
1 round skipping
stretching
1 round shadow boxing
1 round fast punching
3 rounds thai pads. I'm starting to throw some slow punches at him now to get him used to moving out of the way.
2 rounds technique. 1 round check rib kick (with shin pad) & 1 round parry punch
2 rounds heavy bag
2 rounds kick spar (1 round defending, 1 round attacking)
35 push ups (showed him diamond push ups)
35 sit ups
1 round light shadow boxing cool down

I think next week I will teach him the leg kick and really keep drilling the basics into him.

I really have to start ramping up my training now too, stop being so bloody lazy.

Lesson 1

So today I had my first student. He hasn't done any kind of martial art or fighting sport before.

It was interesting, some things I need to improve myself, I need to explain things better (in more detail), and I really need to break things down more, to a more basic level. When you're just training yourself and going through the motions, you don't realise how much you know and how much of a technique is muscle memory.

The program I got him to do was as follows
1 round skipping
Stretching
Basic stance, guard and footwork
Basic jab, cross and left and right rib kick. Got him to do this in the air while I told him what he was doing wrong
3 rounds thai pads, just jab, cross, rib kick
1 round rib kick defence (catch kick) and counter
1 round jab defence (parry) and counter
2 rounds heavy bag
3 x 10 push ups
3 x 10 sit ups
1 round shadow boxing

He seemed to enjoy it and got a good workout so I'm happy about that, but my method of explaining things needs work. I found it was the little things I missed, like I showed him how to jab and cross using good footwork and hand movement, but forgot about telling him to breathe out on the punch. I guess that will come with more experience though. All in all, a good session.

Happy New Year Everyone!

It's been a long time since I wrote last so what has changed? Well I'm now in Australia looking after my mum who had to have a total knee replacement. She is making good progress to recovery and the scar she has is gnarly! At the moment I'm just killing time until she is completely better. As soon as she can drive a car again, I'm off back to Bangkok.

There is no muay thai gym where I live, nothing even close. I have a heavy bag and some thai pads, so I've put an ad in the paper and tomorrow somebody is coming for their first lesson.

In regards to my own training, I've dropped right back on the running, doing some work with a slip bag, my own heavy bag and started getting into the weights. I'm doing a program called 'Ripptoes Starting Strength' which is as follows

Workout 1
Squats 3 x 5
Bench Press 3 x 5
Deadlift 3 x 5
Dips 2 x 8

Workout 2
Squats 3 x 5
Overhead Press 3 x 5
Bent Over Rows 3 x 5
Pull ups 2 x 8

Workout 3 times a week, alternating programs.

I'm gaining about 1 kg per week on this program.

I know this blog is supposed to be about training in Thailand, and it will be when I go back there in about 6 weeks (hopefully), but for now I'm going to keep recording my training in Australia here too.
